Environmental Advocates NY, an affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation, works to advance environmental policies that protect New York's air, land, water, and communities. To help educate the public and hold elected officials accountable, the organization wanted a legislative scorecard that reflected the complexity of its policy priorities rather than relying on simple vote totals.

The Problem

Environmental policy isn't one-size-fits-all. Some bills carry significantly greater importance than others, and the organization needed a scoring system that accurately reflected those differences.

Their methodology required:

  • Four distinct environmental policy categories
  • Custom weighted scoring for bills of varying importance
  • Support for Super Bills—priority legislation that carries additional penalties if it fails to advance through the legislative process
  • A responsive, public-facing scorecard that could be embedded directly into their website

They needed a platform flexible enough to support their methodology without requiring custom software development.

The Solution

Legislative Scorecard's Legislator Scoring Engine™ gave Environmental Advocates NY complete flexibility to implement its unique scoring methodology.

Using the platform, the organization built a legislative scorecard that:

  • Evaluates legislators across Air & Climate, Land & Agriculture, Water, and Healthy Communities
  • Applies weighted scoring based on the relative importance of each bill
  • Incorporates Super Bills, assigning additional penalties when critical legislation fails to advance
  • Uses custom Smokestacks and Trees icons throughout the scorecard to visually represent legislation that harms or protects New York's environment
  • Publishes responsive scorecards using the new Legislative Scorecard Widget, allowing the scorecard to integrate seamlessly with the organization's existing website

Branded, Custom Icons

They're also using our new Custom Icons feature. Rather than relying on generic labels, each bill displays Environmental Advocates' own "Superbill," "Major Benefit," "Substantial Benefit," "Major Detriment," "Substantial Detriment," and "Detriment" SVG icons directly within the voting record. This allows organizations to reinforce their own brand identity while making scorecards easier for supporters to scan and understand.

"I want to thank Environmental Advocates NY for the work that goes into this scorecard every year. It gives constituents a clear, independent look at how their representatives actually vote, not just what they say. I am glad my record reflects where I stand, and I intend to keep it there."
